Adult Classes & Trips / Health & Fitness / Adult Enrichment -
Summer 2024

Use storytelling to dive into the three basic D.M.C. (Diverse Multicultural Communication) skills. Explore interpersonal skills through "Feeding the Story," fostering understanding across cultures. Dive into personal narratives' influence and empower self-awareness. Unpack modern vs. archaic views of suffering to bridge communication gaps and cultivate empathy.

This three session class uses storytelling to dive into the three basic D. M.C. (Diverse Multicultural Communication) skills. Each session is 1.5 hours long and each three session course will use a different story told in three parts followed by a discussion on the three basic D. M. C. skills.
  1.  "Feeding the story" as a life skill for interpersonal communication skills and deepening authentic connections:In “Feeding the Story” we will learn a powerful technique that can be applied to our daily interactions with others, and in so doing greatly deepen our understanding of other cultures, from different countries or racial cultures, corporate cultures, all the way down to our own individualized culture. By having a technique for understanding our differences, we can build more authentic relationships.
  2. The Power of the stories we tell ourselves, and allow others to tell us about ourselves. We will learn how these stories can carry a powerful influence over our lives, and how these stories can be allies or barriers to how we interact with others. We will also examine how through conscious intentionality, we can recraft our own personal stories.
  3. Modern vs. Archaic definitions of suffering and how these definitions impact our communication. By examining the archaic definition of suffering and discussing how the old stories viewed suffering and how our modern definition of suffering has changed we can start to frame suffering in a way that allows us to bridge the communication gap associated with this topic.

Individual stories will be chosen prior to class start date but will be from a large variety of ancient and modern cultures from across the globe and throughout history. A few examples: Mesopotamian, Japanese, Egyptian, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, Indian, and many more.

Arthur Crowell

Arthur Crowell is a storyteller that has navigated multiple lifetimes worth of human experience in his 45 years. Through his immersion in ancient tales from many cultures across the world and throughout time Arthur has developed a course on communication that will help bridge the gap between cultural differences. “I see through the eyes of stories that have been with us as humans from the dawn of civilization. The stories all communicate core themes of understanding and overcoming challenges. Through the sharing of these stories we can begin to strive to also better understand each other and meet each other where we are at on an individual level.”
